PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency Curriculum

Learning Experiences:

The Danbury Hospital PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency Program is a 12-month post-graduate training program. The program consists of seven core block, two elective, and five longitudinal learning experiences. This program structure may be subject to change to customize the program to meet individual interests, goals, and needs of the resident as determined by the Residency Advisory Committee (RAC).

Required Core Block Learning Experiences:

  • Orientation (7 weeks)
  • Infectious Diseases (5 weeks)
  • Critical Care (5 weeks)
  • Transitions of Care (5 weeks)
  • Internal Medicine (5 weeks)
  • Emergency Medicine (5 weeks)
  • Cardiology (5 weeks)

Elective Learning Experiences – Select Two:

  • Pharmacy Informatics (5 weeks)
  • Medication Safety (5 weeks)
  • Academic Leadership (5 weeks)
  • Primary Care Clinic (5 weeks)
  • Teaching and Learning Certificate (8 monthly sessions; avg. 2 hours/month)

Required Longitudinal Learning Experiences:

  • Pharmacy Practice Management (20 weeks; ½ day per week)
    • Medication use evaluation (MUE)   
    • Quality improvement project
  • Anticoagulation Clinic (20 weeks; ½ day per week)
  • Inpatient Pharmacy Operations (spread across residency year)
    • Staffing Requirements:
      • Every third weekend (two 8-hour shifts)
      • One evening per week (4-hour shift)
      • Two holiday shifts (one major, one minor)
  • Research Project (spread across residency year; avg. 5 hours/week)
    • Two dedicated project weeks
    • Half day per week
    • Poster and platform presentations at regional and national conferences

Required Longitudinal Certifications:

  • Advanced Cardiovascular Lide Support (ACLS)
  • American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (resident choice)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
