A message from the Program Director
Welcome to Nuvance Health’s Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program. This is a very exciting time for women’s health in the Mid-Hudson Valley and northwestern Connecticut. Nuvance Health OB/GYN is dedicated to supporting the women of this community by training doctors who make improving the healthcare of women their primary goal.
As the OB/GYN Residency Program Director, I am delighted to be a part of the program’s development and the training of new physicians for women’s health. The goals of the program are simple:
- Graduate OB/GYN physicians whose priority is to protect and improve women’s healthcare;
- Graduate OB/GYN physicians with strong delivery skills;
- Graduate OB/GYN physicians who are technically strong surgeons and;
- Graduate OB/GYN physicians who are critical thinkers and problem solvers, who practice medicine that is evidence-based yet compassionate.
The Nuvance Health Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program will meet these goals in two critical ways:
- Providing and teaching evidence-based medicine;
- Combining the traditional didactic teaching method with an active learning style.
Education is at the heart of this program, where specialists-in-training develop a deep core of the basic sciences and specialty information dedicated to OB/GYN. Residents will be challenged to temper a wealth of information with compassion, and then finely hone that knowledge with discussion and debate. Discussions will focus not only on the medicine of obstetrics and gynecology, but also on how women are viewed and treated in the current healthcare system, by medical research, and by society, and how this information impacts OB/GYN specialists and the medical care they provide.
High-risk obstetrical training occurs in the Maternal Fetal Medicine Department at Vassar Brothers Medical Center (VBMC). This department has a large and diverse population that provides a strong background in obstetrical ultrasound, constant exposure to high-acuity obstetrics, genetic screening, non-invasive prenatal testing as well as obstetrical procedures such as amniocentesis.
Cooperation with community Reproductive, Endocrinology and Infertility groups is strong and well-established in the Mid-Hudson Valley and is the mainstay of training for this subspecialty. Utilizing our community doctors as mentors, teachers and role models is key to much of the specialty training that is provided to residents.
Rotations through Northern Dutchess Hospital’s (NDH) Birthing Center provide alternative training in low-risk deliveries and exposure to midwifery centered care. This highly sought-after approach to low-risk pregnancies has a profound impact on women and their appreciation of the birth process with minimal intervention. This approach reinforces that pregnancy is not a disease and should not be treated as such. Residents gain the knowledge and skills to determine when the natural process requires intervention, and when it should be left to progress on its own.
Surgery rotations at VBMC and NDH provide training in robotics, laparoscopy as well as a number of open cases. Computerized trainers in robotics and laparoscopy are part of the curriculum and are used to provide residents exposure to the life like environment of the operating room before participating in actual surgeries.
Integrated medicine is an alternative care model that is also supported by Nuvance Health. This is a unique and growing field stemming directly from the community’s desire to have more options for evidence-based care than the traditional Western model. OB/GYN rotations in this elective are encouraged and are a growing area in our program with options such as pregnancy yoga, labor massage and more.
As Nuvance Health is a community academic institution, scholarly activity is a requirement, and comes in many forms, from traditional bench research to community studies, institutional quality improvement projects and more.
Finally, this program has more to offer than excellent training. The Hudson Valley is a center of culture, scholarly activity and natural beauty. The area is dotted with excellent universities and community colleges offering everything from an associate degree to higher degree training. Culture abounds in the form of music and stage performances, art and science museums and local history. The area boasts its own branch of the Culinary Institute of America with famous dining options from four-star French cuisine to farm-to-table venues. Sporting events range from college level to professional. The natural beauty of the area is second to none. State and national parks are plentiful enough to fulfill any outdoor adventure. As a native of the Hudson Valley I encourage you to be a part of this burgeoning medical community where cultural, natural and historic richness abound.

Nuvance Health Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency
The Nuvance Health Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program is a four-year training program based at Vassar Brothers Medical Center (VBMC), Nuvance Health’s flagship hospital. Residents rotate monthly through a diverse curriculum of OB/GYN specialties, while attending to a longitudinal patient panel at the outpatient OB/GYN continuity clinic. Obstetrics and Gynecology residents conduct a significant portion of training at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, including the Labor and Delivery Unit, intensive care experience and surgical cases.
Residents also rotate through Nuvance Health’s Northern Dutchess Hospital (NDH) for an experience at the Birthing Center, a holistic and natural birthing center. Additionally, residents rotate through: the Hudson Valley Fertility (HVF) clinic in Fishkill, NY, for their reproductive endocrinology and infertility experience; Premier Gynecology Group for their urogynecology and pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery experience; and complete their GYN Oncology experience on VBMC’s campus. Residents select their own electives during all PGY years. Electives may be any OB/GYN subspecialty, a research month or any other rotation discussed and agreed upon in conjunction with the Program Director.
The outpatient Continuity Clinic Experience (CCE) for the Nuvance Health Obstetrics and Gynecology Program is located at the Nuvance Health Medical Practice (HQMP) OB/GYN offices. Residents at the CCE provide obstetric and gynecological care to a patient panel and gain proficiency integrating outpatient care and inpatient care through this experience.
An example of one year of training in this program is shown below. This is just an example, and training may be adjusted by the Program Director to ensure adequate experience and ACGME compliance. Continuity Clinic Experience
During each year of the program, residents will complete on half-day session per week in the Continuity Clinic Experience (CCE). Residents will be supervised by faculty preceptors and will develop their own patient panel. Residents will follow the patient panel throughout the four years, providing continuity of care for both obstetrical and gynecological treatment.
The CCEs are located in Fishkill, Highland Falls, Poughkeepsie, and Rhinebeck NY. Each community, while providing a diverse population, also has its own personality and attraction. Residents are provided an opportunity to choose a community based on their own desires for how they wish to practice upon graduation (i.e. more urban community versus rural community versus a community more active in integrative or alternative medicine).
The Continuity Clinic Experience provides residents continued management of the healthcare needs of OB/GYN patients. Residents will gain exposure to a wide range of services including, but not limited to, the following:
- Prenatal care
- Genetic counseling and complicated OB
- Maternal fetal medicine consultation
- In-office ultrasound and more
- Adolescent gynecology
- Family planning, counseling and birth control management
- STD counseling, testing and treatment
- Well-woman preventive care
- Annual GYN assessment
- Preconception counseling
- Bone loss management and counseling
- Incontinence assessment
- Gynecological ultrasound
- Infertility tests and management
- Management of endometriosis, fibroids and pelvic pain
- Menopausal and pre-menopausal care
- Cancer screening and more
Additional Program Offerings
Orientation and OB/GYN Boot Camp
As a new obstetrics and gynecology resident, you will participate in an orientation that occurs prior to the start of clinical responsibilities in July. Orientation in June is designed to introduce the resident to the new environment, streamline the on-boarding process and familiarize the resident with the policies and processes of the organization. OB/GYN Boot Camp is separate from orientation, and for OB/GYN residents only. It will provide an academic review of specific topics relevant to the upcoming clinical rotations.
End of Residency Transition
This program is designed to help prepare residents for aspects of professional life outside of residency. Topics include:
- Debt management
- Financial planning counseling
- Employment assistance
- CV (resume) formatting session
- Transition to fellowship
CREOG ABOG In-Training Exam
Residents’ medical knowledge and clinical reasoning will be benchmarked for measuring longitudinal growth through the results of the annual Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology (CREOG) In-Training Exam. All OB/GYN residents will complete the exam during the middle of January. Results will be reviewed with the Program Director and used to individualize curriculum and clinical training (e.g., reading material, board prep and electives).
Academic Didactic Schedule
Daily teaching rounds are held for each patient on the Labor and Delivery Unit. Faculty attendings lead multidisciplinary discussions of patients to provide care and improve patient safety.
All lectures are designed to provide residents with a broad range of knowledge on the ACGME competencies and prepare residents to provide exceptional patient care. Conference topics will vary and may be presented by a faculty member, a guest lecturer or a resident. We believe that academic inquiry is an important part of learning, so we make sure each resident has ample opportunity to present their own research, a journal article or a unique patient care case during their time in the program. The following conferences occur during the weekly academic half-day.
This conference focuses on specific obstetrical and gynecological topics pertinent to the care of patients. Basic sciences and subspecialty care are also discussed.
Case conferences focus on specific patient care cases encountered throughout the week that involve residents. Discussions are held regarding patient condition, plan of care and treatment.
Quality and Process Improvement (Q&PI)
Residents and Faculty will present a patient case and discuss strategies for continued quality and process improvement including how they should be implemented.
A resident reviews and presents a journal article. The topics are presented by the resident with assistance from a faculty mentor.
Medical lectures stemming from a wide variety of medical topics where presenters include invited speakers. Various formats for presenting are utilized in Grand Rounds, such as topic view, clinical pathological conferences, case of the month and others.
Complex Patient Cases (AKA Tumor Board)
Complex Patient Cases is a multidisciplinary conference where complex patient cases are discussed in significant detail, including patients with difficult treatment plans, recurring admission patients and patients with complex diagnoses. Faculty facilitate these discussions with residents’ and other team members’ input.
Topics are targeted toward board exams and are presented by core faculty members.
Supporting the ACGME guidelines, residents must submit a minimum of 3 scholarly activities per year.

Requirements to Apply
The following items are required for interview consideration for the Nuvance Health Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program. All items must be received through the ERAS application portal:
- Medical school transcripts
- Personal statement (this does not have to be a written essay. It can be a project that displays the candidate’s individuality such as a video, music composition, painting or photography, etc)
- Current CV
- Three (3) letters of recommendation (no more than one year old)
- Dean’s letter
- USMLE 1 and 2 scores or COMLEX scores and/ or NBOME (COMLEX) Level 1 and 2
- Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) Certification, if applicable

Where will I train?
The majority of training takes place at Vassar Brother Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, NY. Continuity Clinic Experience will occur at a Nuvance Health Medical Practice. Some specialty experiences and electives may occur at any of these locations.
When is my application due?
Applications are due through ERAS on November 1st.
How many residency positions are there?
We accept four (4) residents each year, for a total of 16 obstetrics and gynecology residents. We want to create a tight-knit community, with each resident feeling they are an important part of the program, while providing an excellent educational experience. We accept only PGY1 positions.
When are the interviews?
Interviews take place on select dates in October and November. If you are selected for an interview, you will be notified via ERAS.
